A budget kitchen is not a low-quality kitchen. With well-chosen ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinet boxes, a custom laminate countertop and reliable appliances, you get a clean, durable kitchen for less than $20,000 in cabinet supply and installation.

This article is part of our series on the cost of a kitchen in Quebec in 2026. All prices were collected on October 2, 2026, in Canadian dollars, before GST and QST.

What a Budget kitchen costs

Quebec renovation guides put a complete Budget kitchen between $15,000 and $30,000, including demolition, plumbing and electrical. Here is what supplying and installing the cabinets of a typical kitchen costs in this range (quantities in linear feet, LF):

What “budget” means, line by line

Cabinets ($135 per LF). Ready-to-assemble melamine cabinet boxes, such as IKEA SEKTION. A real example: 10 feet of SEKTION base and wall cabinets with Axstad matte white doors, legs, toe kicks, rails, panels and handles cost $2,647.91 at IKEA Canada on October 2, 2026. That works out to $132 per cabinet linear foot, the baseline for this range.

Island ($160 per LF). Base cabinets cost more per foot than the base-and-wall average, because they are deeper and hold the drawers.

Countertop ($25 per sq ft, installed). Custom-made post-formed laminate, installed. It is the only item sold installed: in Quebec, a countertop is always sold with its template, fabrication and installation.

Backsplash ($3 per sq ft) and flooring ($2.50 per sq ft). Subway-style tile on the wall, and luxury vinyl plank (LVP) or laminate on the floor.

Faucets and lighting. An entry-level IKEA, Glacier Bay or Moen faucet ($150), a drop-in stainless steel sink ($180) and IKEA or big-box store pendants ($75).

Appliances.

  • IKEA or Broan under-cabinet range hood: $300.
  • 30- to 36-in. IKEA or Frigidaire induction cooktop: $1,100.
  • 30-in. IKEA, Whirlpool or GE wall oven: $1,800.
  • IKEA or Electrolux panel-ready refrigerator: $1,500.
  • IKEA or Frigidaire dishwasher: $550.

Options that drive up the bill

OptionPrice
9-ft ceiling (39- to 40-in. wall cabinets)$10 per LF
10-ft ceiling (stacked 15-in. cabinet)$40 per LF
Under-cabinet lighting, plug-in LED strips$20 per LF
Drawer cabinet instead of doors$140 each
Glass door$15 extra per door
Interior storage (corner, garbage, shelf)$150 each
Waterfall edge on the island$800
Wall tile$3 per sq ft

Where to save without regrets

  • Keep the layout. Moving the sink or the range brings in the plumber and the electrician, costs that are not included in these prices. Replacing a sink and its faucet in the same spot costs about $312 in installation at Home Depot.
  • Invest in base drawers. At $140 more per cabinet, drawers make a budget kitchen much more practical than shelves behind doors.
  • Install the cabinets yourself only if you are comfortable doing it. Installation costs about $90 per LF; a levelling mistake shows for years.
  • Keep a margin for the unexpected. Cabinet rates are a floor: finishing panels, mouldings and pantries are often added.
